What Is Minimum Bending Radius?
Every MV&LV power cable has a minimum bending radius — the tightest curve it can tolerate without damage. For most medium voltage cables, that's 8 to 12 times the cable diameter. For low voltage, 6 to 8 times. Bend tighter than that, and you stretch the copper strands on the outside of the curve and compress the insulation on the inside. The insulation develops micro-cracks. Voltage stress finds those cracks. Months later, the cable fails.
The Field Mistake
Pullers often bend cables to fit into junction boxes, around corners, or through conduit elbows. They use muscle, not math. A 2-inch diameter MV&LV power cable needs a minimum bend radius of 16 inches (8x diameter). A standard 90-degree conduit elbow has a radius of about 12 inches. That's too tight. The cable gets forced in, the insulation stretches, and the failure clock starts ticking.
How Other Cables Compare
An energy storage cable inside a BESS rack can tolerate a tighter bend — usually 5 to 6 times diameter — because it has finer strands and more flexible insulation. An aerial insulated cable strung between poles isn't bent at all; it hangs straight or with very large radius sag curves. But MV&LV power cable is stiff. Treat it like rebar, not rope.
The Fix

Before pulling, measure your cable diameter. Calculate the minimum bend radius (diameter × 8 for MV). Write it on the reel.

Use sweep elbows (long radius) instead of standard elbows. A 24-inch radius sweep is worth the extra cost.

Never bend MV&LV power cable by hand around a sharp corner. Use a cable bender or a large-diameter pulley.

Inspect every bend before backfilling. If you see a kink or a flat spot, cut it out and splice.
Real-World Cost
A data center had three MV&LV power cable failures in two years. All at bends. After investigating, they found installers using standard conduit bodies (tight radius) for 500kcmil feeders. Switching to large-radius sweeps eliminated the failures. Cost difference per bend: $50. Cost of each failure: $15,000.
Your MV&LV power cable is tough, but it's not flexible. Respect the bend radius. Measure before you pull. Your cable will last decades, not months.
